Okonomiyaki Recipe

Okonomiyaki is a popular street food in Japan and it is extremely easy to make at home using the scraps in your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • cup flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 tbsp dashi powder
  • 200 g chopped cabbage
  • 2 green onions (chopped)
  • 1 cup chopped octopus or any protein
  • 1 tbsp oil

Garnish

  • okonomiyaki sauce
  • kewpie mayo
  • bonito flakes
  • green onions

Instructions

  • Into a bowl mix together hot water and dashi powder. Let it cool. This is your dashi stock.

  • Into a bowl mix together eggs, flour, salt, sugar, and the dashi stock you made in step 1.
    2 large eggs, 1¼ cup flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar
  • Add chopped cabbage, green onions, as well as chopped octopus or any other diced protein you want.

  • Heat up a pan over medium heat and add 1 tbsp of oil.

  • Add the batter into a 12 inch pan and cook for 10-15 minutes until the bottom is crisp and golden brown.
  • Flip and continue cooking another 10 minutes until the other side is golden as well.
  • Top with okonomiyaki sauce, mayo, green onions, and bonito flakes.
